Non sine periculo

Saturday, September 26, 2026

How much risk are you willing to accept to save something that will outlast you?

"Between them there are four human daredevils, who were called heretics and rebels by many and visionaries by a few. Now the fate of civilization depends on them."

A Latin phrase has been circling in my head all morning, one I found penciled in the margin of a page from the same canvas notebook I mentioned in my last entry: non sine periculo. Not without danger. I don't know if it's a title, or just the sigh of someone who knew more than they wanted to.

The fragment I read today speaks of the Sun. Of how its inner fire accelerated, and the time it had left us shrank violently. It also speaks of digital beings and humans who learned to live side by side without war — something that seemed impossible for centuries, and became the condition for both sides' survival. And it speaks of four people, called heretics by many and visionaries by a few. They were meant to build an artificial star.

I can't stop thinking about that split in naming. Heretic. Visionary. The same act, two different words, depending on who's watching and from what distance in time. A crisis is usually the kind of moment best recognized and seized before it slips by unnoticed. Those four recognized theirs in a dying Sun. I recognize mine in a handful of fragments I can't say whether I found, or which found me.

Maybe that's the definition of risk that actually makes sense: not the absence of fear, but consenting to act despite it, because the stakes are larger than your own peace of mind. Non sine periculo: there is no good without risk, no discovery without the fear of what it will expose.

I also wonder how much of what we call courage today will be called madness tomorrow, and the other way around. I don't know whether I'm closer to a heretic or a visionary in what I'm doing here — writing down these fragments and handing them to you before I've fully understood what they mean. Maybe that's the only honest position: to admit I don't know, and keep climbing anyway.
