Ekert’s Alcatryon-Thalassa

Monday, May 4, 2026

This story begins with archaeology: classical excavations, trowels and brushes, dust that has not stirred for an unthinkable time. It begins nowhere near a cosmic expedition. And yet it is there that humanity finds something that changes everything.

An artifact older than any human civilization. An engine whose principle of operation is almost incomprehensible. Thanks to it, the first stellar arks can be built.

What I appreciate most in this story is one thing. Technology usually finds us before we are ready for it, led by chance and curiosity to places no one had thought to look.

That seems to me a hopeful fact. It suggests that the future is open to the curious as much as to the prepared, and that a spade in an unlikely place can be worth a great deal more than a plan.
